Safe Motorcycle Habits to Consider
If you're a regular motorcycle rider, or even a biking enthusiast, you probably spend a great deal of time behind the wheel. Whether you're running errands, commuting to work or school, or even just taking to the open road for no reason other than y our personal enjoyment, you want to be safe regardless. Though motorcycles may not be the deathtraps some perceive them to be, they do put their riders at increased risk of injury due to a lack of protections, such as walls and seat belts. That only makes the safety features you do have at your disposal all the more important, so if you want to make sure you can continue riding your bike for years down the road, consider these motorcycle safety habits.
Keep that helmet on, and make sure it's secure!
This is the most obvious and important safety notice to keep in mind. While motorcycle helmets are required by law in some states, that isn't the case everywhere. Regardless of what the law asks, you should consider what your personal needs are. If you're ever thrown from your bike or collide with something while driving, a helmet could be y our last defense, making a difference between a cracked skull and a bad headache with some exterior scrapes and bruises. And just wearing a helmet alone isn't enough. You want to make sure your helmet is properly secured, so that, in the event your thrown from you're bike, your helmet doesn't get thrown from you as well.
Motorcycle lights may not strike you as safety features, but it becomes apparent that they are the second you start riding at night. Just as with cars, and perhaps m ore so because motorbikes are harder to see in general, automotive lights provide other drivers with a way to track your movements int he dark. The better other drivers are able to see you, and the better you're able to see them, the more aware of each other everyone can be.
This may not be for your safety as much as for the safety of your bike. When you park your bike somewhere that has an eerie vibe or seems somewhat sketchy to you, and you don't want to leave your bike unattended, a lock and chain can serve you well. Sure, you may be safe if your bike's stolen, but think of your bike's safety. After all if you're a motorcycle enthusiast, your bike is as good as your baby, so keeping it safe is probably pretty high on your overall priority list.
